May will be an exciting month in and around Clarens, with a series of outdoor events that celebrate adventure, endurance, and the beauty of the surrounding mountains. From trail running and mountain biking to long distance endurance challenges, there is something for both seasoned athletes and families looking to enjoy the outdoors.

1 - 2 May: Golden Gate Trail Run and MTB Challenge

Taking place in the breathtaking landscape of Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the Golden Gate Trail Run and MTB Challenge promises an unforgettable long weekend of running, riding, and outdoor adventure.

Participants can choose from several trail running options, including 40 km, 25 km, and 10 km routes, or mountain biking distances of 44 km and 22 km. For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, the Friday programme offers a range of family friendly activities, including a fun run, fun ride, the King and Queen of the Buttress challenge, and a relaxed MTB outride.

Whether you are racing competitively or simply enjoying a weekend in nature, the event offers the perfect opportunity to experience the dramatic scenery and fresh mountain air of the region.

2 May: Maluti Double 90

Also taking place over the same weekend is the legendary Maluti Double 90, one of South Africa’s most iconic endurance cycling events.

Cyclists will tackle a demanding 180 km ride across beautiful but challenging terrain, pushing both physical and mental limits along the way. The event is built around teamwork, with riders working together to complete the course and share the thrill of the journey.

The Maluti Double 90 is not just about reaching the finish line. It is about embracing the challenge, enjoying the scenery, and experiencing the unique energy that makes this race a highlight on the local cycling calendar.

22 - 24 May: Amohela MTB Challenge

The Amohela MTB Challenge makes for a weekend of mountain biking excitement.

Preparation plays a key role in conquering this race. Riders are encouraged to build endurance through interval sprints, pushing their heart rate into the red zone to mimic the effort required when climbing at altitude. Practising on loose and technical terrain is also essential, helping riders maintain traction and control even when the climbs get tough.

And because no Clarens event would be complete without a little fun along the way, participants can stop at the water point hosted by Clarens Brewery for a quick refresher. It is equal parts hydration and morale booster, a perfect reminder that in Clarens, adventure and celebration often go hand in hand.

With spectacular mountain scenery and a welcoming community atmosphere, May is an ideal time to visit Clarens for anyone who enjoys outdoor adventure. Whether you are running the trails, riding the mountains, or simply cheering from the sidelines, these events promise an energetic and memorable month.
