5 September: Titanic Challenge
Taking place in the beautiful Clarens Village Conservancy, the Titanic Challenge has quickly become a favourite on the South African trail running calendar since its establishment in 2022.
This one day trail running event takes participants across mountain trails, farmland, and protected natural areas surrounding Clarens. Known for its excellent organisation, strong local support, and focus on safety, the race offers a variety of route options suitable for both experienced runners and those new to trail running.
Participants can choose between distances of:
• 5 km
• 10 km
• 21 km
• 35 km
• 50 km
The longer routes include sections through private game and livestock farms, with more than 30 km of trail only accessible on race day, making it a unique experience for runners.
Visitors are reminded that no dogs are allowed on the routes, as parts of the event pass through protected and privately owned areas.
24 to 26 September: Clarens Festival of Lights
Later in the month, Clarens transforms into a glowing celebration of creativity and culture during the Clarens Festival of Lights, taking place around Heritage Day weekend.
Hosted around Clarens Square and throughout the town, the festival is known as one of the most unique family events of the year. Visitors can expect immersive light installations, artistic displays in nature, workshops, performances, and intimate cultural experiences that bring people and communities together.
For a few evenings, the town itself becomes a living artwork filled with colour, creativity, and atmosphere, making it a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
26 September: “Juweel van die Vrystaat Basaar”
On 26 September, the local NG Church Clarens will host the much loved “Juweel van die Vrystaat Basaar.”
This traditional community bazaar is well known for its warm atmosphere and delicious local food. Visitors can look forward to favourites such as:
“Pannekoek, “Braaivleis” and freshly baked cakes.
The bazaar offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the hospitality and community spirit that make Clarens such a special destination.
